In this video, we are going to sow some tomatoes in trays for planting out in the garden later.

In about two or three weeks, we will take the little tomato seedlings out and we will transplant them into a small pot. We will let them grow into quite big plants and then we can plant them into the ground either outside or in the polytunnel.

Now we are going to sow some peas in pots. We have got two varieties here. The ‘Hurst Green Shaft’ pea is a modern variety that grows only about a metre high but produces a lot of peas. The ‘Alderman’ pea is an older variety and has been a popular pea since the nineteenth century. This tall pea (approximately eight feet) requires one of the long canes.

Both pea varieties should come through in about four or five days. We will then be able to plant them outside in the garden in two or three weeks.

In this video, we are going to plant some potatoes. We are using a variety called ‘Charlotte’.

We are careful not to plant our Charlotte potatoes too early because if the frost catches the leaves when they start to come through the soil then it knocks them back. We first place ours in a frost-free shed and let the little sprouts grow on them. Sprouting gives them a head start.

Follow along with us now as we plant our sprouted potatoes in one of our growing spaces.

In about two or three weeks, the potatoes come through and start to show their leaves.

In this video, we make our own compost.

The composting process is a circle of life. Southsea Green grows potatoes. Once we have harvested the potatoes, we have got the leaves. Potato leaves are just waste. If you put them into the compost bin, they can go back into the garden as a great feed.

This video shows three methods of composting: Compost bins, a compost tumbler, and a wormery.

Please visit Southsea Green Community Garden to see how we use the compost on our growing beds.

Join us and explore our resources section to learn more.

We offer a range of educational activities, from garden talks and workshops to one-to-one advice sessions.
